Default Side by side no longer defrosts
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 3638587811
Age: More than 10 years

My Kenmore is not defrosting anymore but it still keeps my food cold. I have to turn it up as it is freezing to keep the produce side cool, the dials freeze and it just starts leaking water, a lot of water! The freezer is freezing up(ice starts coming out of the back panel) and if I don't defrost it, the other side starts freezing the food and then is when it starts leaking. After I defrost it, the frig runs fine for a while(no freezing evident) until the ice starts coming out the back panel and the cycle starts again. Any help would be appreciated.

Your defrost timer is located in the fridge section behind the light shield.

With the compressor running turn the defrost timer knob until the fridge shut off.

Here is a defrost timer. Yours may be black.

The fridge will now be in the defrost mode and it will last about 20 to 25 minutes.

Look in the freezer section and you should be able to see the heater when it is on.

Remove the panel of the back wall of the freezer so you can see better.

If the fridge does not start back up the timer is bad and will have to be replaced.

The part number for your defrost timer is PS310869.

If the fridge does start back up but the freezer did not defrost there is either a problem with the defrost heater or the defrost thermostat.

Here is the part number for the defrost heater PS303265.

Here is the part number for the defrost thermostat PS303545.

The fridge must be at operating temperature to do this test.
