Ive got a Roper frig, model RT21AKXKQ01 thats 5 years old. It is fine sometimes and other times it gets warm. I suspected the thermostat and removed it and connected an ammeter to it to check continuity while dipping it in and out of ice water. It seemed to be working. I'm stumped. Help please.

You have something intermittant. If you can find this fridge. unresponsive just tap on the cold control. If it now works, replace it.
Also, check the defrost timer the same way, it might be intermittant also.
If these are ok, you may have a compressor hard starting. When unresponsive, verify you have no occasional start noises, like vibrating then stop.
