Default Replacing Refridgerator Compressor
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 8201548
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi all,

I have a Kenmore refrigerator (2001) that I bought used about a year ago. The compressor was making a loud clanging upon shut-off. From some research it looks like this is because of the motor in the compressor. I took off the back panel and looked and when it shuts off it certainly rattles around a lot. Seems to be attached tight, so I'm pretty certain it's the motor. When the guy delivered it, it was laying down in the back of his truck and seems like that might have caused the problem. You live and learn.

The noises have gotten louder and now it hums the entire time its on. Other than that the fridge is in really great shape. I'd rather fix it now rather than wait until it goes out and I lose everything in the fridge while I scramble to get it fixed.

Anyway before I go ahead and order the new compressor (seems more reasonable in pricing than getting a new fridge) I want to make sure it can be a DIY replacement. I'm pretty handy and it looks like a fairly simple swap out but I wanted to get some opinions before I go ahead and spend the money for the part.

Something a novice can do?

Thanks for your time
Joe

I wouldn't try it myself. You have to cut and soldier the lines going in and out of the compressor. Recover the freon and recharge with freon. The actual nuts and bolts would be easy.

Thanks for the heads up, I obviously didn't know how much was involved. I'll be sure to stay out of that area.
