That is the highest quote I have ever heard!! Typically around $300-$450 for a typical replacement. All the servicers have a percentage of replacements that fail.
So the prices include a "compensation" for these failures.
For me I am reluctant to do it unless I feel it will be successful and will not be rushed to do it. Burnouts,difficult or small area to work in under fridge or other symptoms like a suspected refrigerant leak turn me off big time.
Basically ask yourself if the refrigerator is worth it and remember that a percentage of repairs fail!!
