Our freezer on the refrigerator quit working. We have a side by side. He said it would cost about $800 to rplace the compressor. Does this sound accurate?
He said we should just buy a new refrigerator.

That is the highest quote I have ever heard!! Typically around $300-$450 for a typical replacement. All the servicers have a percentage of replacements that fail.
So the prices include a "compensation" for these failures.
For me I am reluctant to do it unless I feel it will be successful and will not be rushed to do it. Burnouts,difficult or small area to work in under fridge or other symptoms like a suspected refrigerant leak turn me off big time.
Basically ask yourself if the refrigerator is worth it and remember that a percentage of repairs fail!!

Ours did the same thing yesterday... Repairman said it would cost at least $500.00 to repair it. We paid right at 1000.00 in 2001. A sales lady told us to check and see if a power surge might have hit the compressor. We are looking into it now. Have you had any luck with yours?
