Default Refrigerator wont cool
Brand: Amana
Model Number: abb2527dew
Age: 1 - 4 years

I have an amana top fridge less than 2 years old that wont cool. Freezer on bottom works fine. A tech thawed it out and my wife thought he said it was stuck in defrost mode and needs a new electronic board. Does this make sense and can I fix this myself with parts purchased over the net.

When it's in defrost mode the compressor is off so there would be not further cooling taking place.

If it's stuck out of defrost mode then ice will build up behind freezer rear wall and block the flow of cold air to the fridge and eventually affect the freezer. In this case it could be the control board assuming the defrost heater and defrost thermostat checked out ok.

Part 5 on this diagram is the control board.Maytag Appliance ABB2527DEW Parts List

I would check the defrost thermostat. Make sure you check the defrost thermostat when it is cold, or else you will get a false reading. I have replace quite a few on that product. If you inspect it, look and see if the back of the defrost thermostat , is pushed up, then you know for sure. If you have a meter, you can check the heater first, buy pulling the wires off the heater, and check for continuity. If you get it, it is good.Of course the refrigerator is unplugged when you do this. Then check the defrost thermostat. You might have to cut the wires on the defrost thermostat to check it, so when you cut the wires, make sure you leave enough room to wire them back up. If you get a continuity reading it is good, if not replace it. Now, if both of these parts are good, you know for sure the board is bad. So if you don't have a meter, get a cheap one. About 15 dollars, it will be worth having around the house. If you need me to teach you how to work the meter, or if you need help, I can be reached at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Thanks woodchuck for your response. My wife said it was similar to what the tech was explaining to her. I saw the receipt and the only thing I could make out was jazz and control board. They called and said if I want to order the part it would be $175.17. On the link you gave me it was $79.10. I am pretty handy with stuff, is this something I can do myself?
Thanks again
