Default Refrigerator random freezes
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: PLHS237ZAB0
Age: 5 - 10 years

the refrigerator side occasionally freezes all contents. we've had a technician look at it several times. by the time he arrives the problem seems to have corrected itself and he leaves without being able to diagnose the problem. This has been going on for several years with the refrigerator contents being ruined a couple of times or more each year.

calling the company was a frustrating runaround (i could not talk with a technician because it was no longer under warranty), but an affiliated parts distributer said she thought the problem "might" be the temperature control box, which to me seemed likely enough.

my question for them and now for you is this: will a new temperature control box kit ($125) simply replace one faulty part with another or has the design been improved upon? the parts person couldn't tell me this, only that "we sell a lot of them". if this is a recurring problem, i don't want to keep sinking money into a (frozen) lemon.

or, is there something else going on that might cause this problem? Thanks for your help!

Turn the cold control all the way up and after an hour, measure the freezer temperature in the back and post.

You refrigeration system seems fine. You have an intermittant problem, either the cold control is acting up, or the adaptive defrost board if you have one.
Next time you see the refrigerator temperature going down near freezing, tap the cold control, if it now shuts off=bad cold control.

thanks. yes, no problem with things getting cold! both the freezer and refrig. controls are typically at their lowest settings. unfortunately i can't be around to constantly monitor the next freeze-up.

are you, or is anyone there familiar with this model? i will most likely go ahead with ordering the temperature control box kit unless there is a possibility that the adaptive defrost board (do i have one?) is faulty, as you say. how do you test for this?

thanks for your help! this forum is much appreciated.
