Default Refrigerator making squeaky noise only at night
Brand: KitchenAid
Model Number: Not sure
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi,

Just recently my refrigerator started making very loud squeaky noises between about 11 pm and 6 am. Sounds kinda like a mouse, its very loud (can hear throughout the house) but only at night. I tried dusting the coils but that didn't help. Any thoughts of what it could be and how to fix? Its a side to side frig/freezer, with water and ice, and the coils are on top. It seems to be working just fine as well.

Thanks
Justin

You will have to get up and isolate the cause

It could be the evaporator fan. Possible that the unit is doing a defrost, fan is shut off, then when it finishes the defrost the fan starts up and squeels till it gets going. May also be the compressor fan.

Usually a fridge defrosts every 8 hours or so but yours may have adaptive defrost control which will vary it's frequency depending on fridge usage.

One way to check would be to unplug the unit for 15 or so minutes, then plug it back in. Check for the noise.
OR
Force the unit into a defrost cycle. Your manual may tell you how to do this.
