Default Refrigerator/Freezer both warm
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GD2SHAXkQ01
Age: 1 - 4 years

Side by Side Whirlpool Gold with ice maker - A few weeks ago we opened the freezer door in the morning to a flood of water (once was ice). Both the freezer & refrigerator were warm. Fans were still blowing, lights still on, sound like motor coming from beneath. I cleaned it out completely, vacuumed coils & did basic maintenance but still blew warm air. I had a busy few weeks and could do nothing about repair (we had an old fridge in the basement & chest freezer to hold all food).

I now have time to troubleshoot and am wondering what things to check. This evening, in getting the model # out, it seems the air is no longer blowing. Maybe I made a mistake in leaving it plugged in (I thought it best to keep the air flowing to prevent molding, etc.). I'm hoping it's just in a "sit" mode "thinking" it doesn't need "cooling" right now, but the silence makes me very nervous.

What can you suggest and what other questions would you have?

Sincerely,

The Beyler

It is possible that the compressor start relay failed. It is located on the compressor.

If the fans are off and you have left it plugged in then it could have gone in to the defrost cycle.

If the fans come back on listen for the compressor to see if you can hear it trying to start.

Check the wiring in the fridge section.

Here is a link to your fridge model GD2SHAXkQ01.

You will need a meter to check this. Just check for power to the compressor. If power, remove compressor plastic cover and remove plastic start relay. Check it for continuity, if open replace. I allways check compressor windings for continuity. The klixon overload device is pushed on the common pin. Check for continuity between it and other two pins. Resistance should be around 3-4 ohm. If not the compressor is bad.
