Default Refridge and Freezer won't cool down
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: RFS26ZRF
Age: 5 - 10 years

My refridge will not get cooler than 45 - 50 degrees using a appliance thermometer that we placed on the shelf. Have the setting on the coldest but still nothing. The freezer part somewhat freezes but not all the way.

Your fridge depends on the freezer. You should check frost in the back of your freezer.. Defrost system could be out. Try defrosting it for 24 hours by unplugging and see if it helps.

No frost inside the freezer. The other night we had a bad storm and knocked electricity out for about 2 hours. This unit has not acted right since.

Check to see if the condenser fan at the back under the fridge is running.
Is the compressor motor near that fan running.
Are the coils warm ,cold or hot.

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. stopped up? clear? ice in one spot . frost everywhere.

Ice (frost) on top of evaporator and the the heat exchanger. Unpluged the unit and within the hour ice was gone. I am now just wondering if the Defrost Thermostat is out. I have heard from several different people that has happened on their units and they replaced them and fixed the problems. From what I have read the past few days, this Defrost Thermostat is pretty much what controls the freezer temperature and thus controls the fridge temp as well. If I am misunderstanding this please let me know.

After the ice melted did it run like it's supposed to. If yes you can check out your defrost system by testing the defrost timer, defrost heater , defrost thermostat.Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Fix a Refrigerator - ACME HOW TO.com

I turn the temperature controls off for 24 hrs then turn them back on. After 30 minutes the evaporator had frost back on the top 1/3 of it. From what I have been reading, it sounds like the defrost thermostat has gone bad. What do you think.

I have now replaced all 3 pieces of the defrost system and the evaporator core is still freezing up. Any suggestions?
