Default Refer over Freezer runs constantly
Brand: Amana
Model Number: BX21TW
Age: 5 - 10 years

AMANA mod#BX21TW Refrigerator, Freezer bottom/Refer top. Age about 8 years.

My Refer has me stumped. Maybe someone here is able to help me figure this out.

From what I have collected in my research: The unit should run about 80% of the time. It defrosts every 8 hours for the 32 minute cycle. Manual says if it runs too much and is too cold to clean the coils and around the compressor. (this was DONE)

Here is what is still happening:
The refer section is getting too cold at around 28deg on the freezer setting of (1) and the air box gate valve at lowest setting of (1). The freezer is about 10deg at the (1) setting. Set it to a higher number and they get colder.
The gate air valve in the back of the refer is not stuck and is functioning.
The defrost cycle is working as it should.
The unit runs continually except for the 32 minute defrost cycle.
In spite of the fact that it runs constantly the coils are only slightly warm and not hot.

I replaced the single thermostat control in the freezer adjustment box and it makes no difference. Now, I am at the point of setting the freezer at 1-1/2 (getting 4deg) and with the air box set at (1) and the grate taped almost closed it is about 44deg in the refer.

Any ideas about the bugaboo here?

Thanks in Advance, Idahjo

You replaced the thermostat and it will not turn the freezer off. Maybe check that thermostat.>>>Refrigerator Repair Guide: How To Test the Temperature Control - ACME HOW TO.com

How about the evaporator fan in the freezer. Does it run all the time except during defrost. It is responsible for blowing the cold air into the fridge. The thermostat should also turn it off when it turns off the compressor.

Thank You Kindly WOODCHUCK. The evaporator Fan is running and cuts off on defrost. It runs as long as, and evrytime the compressor runs. They are in sync.

Here is an update on the 'bugger': It appears to have "accepted" the temperature control after a couple days (!??) Both the refer and the freezer dials are numbered 1-7. Currently, with the freezer control on (5) it is at 5-deg. This setting on the freezer control and the refer control to (4) makes it 35-deg in the referegerator compartment.

But... the unit still runs constantly except for the defrost cycle (AS BEFORE). I was told that this unit was supposed to run 80% and rest 20%, excluding the defrost cycle. Does that sound correct? I asked an appliance salesman yeaterday, "what percentage of the time do these units on the floor run?" He said, he had no idea as the manufacturers do not specify any of that information. I said, then a person has to buy one and take it home to see? "pretty much, says he!" <good grief!!>

If this unit will continue to hold the temperatures noted above I will just keep using it. $1000 +/- would take a long time to recover from the 20% (?) power usage savings!

Thanks all. (Just in case anyone is interested in ‘strange’ behavior) I believe what I need is an Exorcism, this thing is possessed!

Two days later, the thing, has decided to maintain 10deg in the freezer with it set at 6 ½ (7 is highest setting) thus keeping the refer at 37-38 deg. These temperatures seem to be maintained except through the defrost cycle while it runs on continually.

Thanks again for your help Woodchuck….
