Default Red Glow in My Freezer
Brand: Maytag
Model Number: MTB1956DEW

I noticed a red glow in the freezer vents of my Maytag refrigerator and am concerned that there might be a serious problem with my fridge. Should I unplug the fridge and call a service tech? Could this be a serious problem?

The refrigerator appears to be keeping things cold in both the freezer and refrigerator sections.

Please give me some advise.

O/T:

OMGosh!! Your fridge has been posessed!! Have you ever seen 'Ghostbusters'? Don't sit in an armchair facing the fridge!!

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. ) I apologize for threadjacking - I have no idea what the problem might be; but if you aren't going to lose a bunch of food, I might shut it off until someone with the know-how responds.

Gosh, I am a bit paranoid about things like that. Nowadays food poisoning is so rampant, I would be nervous about the food. I am not a technician by any means but I do know if it was my fridge, I would be getting an expert opinion.

Could it be that your ref's gone radioactive?

Okay, I checked the back of my fridge, a GE, to see the lay-out. The motor and all the serious stuff is at the bottom. A red glow at freezer level could mean a hot wire. If your fridge's mine, I'm on my way to the phone for a technician.

Default Answer - Red Glow in My Freezer

I found the answer to my question. I was reading my owners manual that there is a red glow the freezer vents of my Maytag Refrigerator when the freezer goes through the defrost cycle.

It is normal for the fridge to do this.

That is a relief to hear.

Thought everyone would like to know this is not a problem at all.

Guess my dad was right. If all else fails.....Read the manual.

What you are seeing is the defrost heater doing its job. This is normal. It happens about every eight hours but normally we do not see this because it happen through the night.
