Default Practally new Kenmore Fridge on Fritz
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 25SSA
Age: 1 - 4 years

I have a 20 month old Kenmore coldspot 106.56536400 (side by side built in 2005) that I thought had a defrost problem because it was all iced up on the evaporator coils. The fridge side was not cooling properly and this led me to notice the icing up in the freezer side evaporators. I ran diagnostics on it and all worked ok. I defrosed it and back to normal except it seems to run all of the time. I set the freezer temp setting to the warmest one (#1) and the freezer is cooling to around zero degrees - this is too cold right?. The fridge side temp is fine.

My question is: Does this sound like a thermostat problem or a defrost problem and do the electronic models have a thermostat or is it all incorporated into the controller (big bucks). Maybe a bi-metal problem? HELP!

The electronic models have thermistors that sense the temperature.

If there was frost build up on the coils this would indicate a defrost problem.

It could be a problem with the bi metal or the heater or the control.

Here is a link to your fridge model 106.56536400.

I am having nearly the exact same problem with my Kenmore(Whirlpool) 106.56549400 (2004)

It started last October which would have been about 30 months after I bought it. We noticed it because the fridge side was getting warmer (50 degrees). The evaporator coils were frozen over and frost was forming on the freezer back panel. Sears technician said the electronic control needed replaced (the adaptive defrost control is on this board). Rather than pay Sears $500 to do the work I bought the part online and installed it myself. After that the fridge worked great and the defrost was working fine until this week. Four months after replacing the electronic control I'm right back in the same boat. Evaporator coils are frozen up and the defrost doesn't appear to be running. I'm so frustrated I want to just go buy another fridge.
