Default Odor Blown by Condensor Fan
Brand: Amana
Model Number: BX21TW
Age: 5 - 10 years

I have an Amana, bottom freezer refrigerator. During the summer months, especially when it is hot and humid, I notice an unpleasant odor which comes from the air being blown out by the condensor fan. Today, I removed the kick plate from the front of the refrigerator and vacuumed the area in front of the coil grill (thinking maybe the dust had mildewed). I could not vacuum the actual coils because of the coil grill. I also removed the back panel and vacuumed the area around the fan. I could see a drip pan, but could not figure out how to access it.

Is the wire grill in front of the coils removable by a do-it-yourselfer to clean the coils? Am I supposed to be cleaning in there? Is the drip pan accessable other than removing the condenser? Also, could the odor be coming from the motor itself, even though it appears to be working fine (bearings??)

Thank you for your help.

The odor is likely coming from the drip pan.

The best way to get rid of the odor is to clean the pan as much as possible and then sprinkle with baking soda.

The wire is not removable.

The condenser coils should be cleaned at least one a year more often if you have pets.
