Ice maker makes a loud vibrating noise when it refills. It looks like we're only getting a few cubes at a time too.

If it's not a straightforward fix, is it better to just replace the whole thing vs. paying for a service call plus parts??

If you check your water valve and it's ok then it maybe best to replace the ice maker.
