Question No cooling no freezing, no water in door
Brand: Amana
Model Number: SQD26VW
Age: 5 - 10 years

About 2 months ago, the fridge stopped working along with the freezer. I unplugged it, pulled off the back cover and cleaned the coils. When I plugged it back in, everything kicked on and worked fine until last week.

Last week I went to get some water, and the dispenser in the door didn't work. I opened the freezer, everything was melting and the fridge was warming up. No cold air was blowing in either compartment. The fan is running next to the compressor, but the compressor is not running, and hot to the touch, but not hotter than expected. None of the lines coming from the compressor are cold either, and actually they are nearly as warm as the compressor. If I unplug it for a while, and the compressor cools, it will run and start cooling again, usually long enough to make some ice, but eventually it will stop. It may go a day, or it may go an hour before stopping, but it will stop. I've noticed that anytime that the unit stops cooling, the water in the door stops working, and the only things that work are the ice dispenser, lights, and fan in the back by the compressor.

I've read several postings, all describing similar symptoms, but with different solutions. The only thing that I can find that is different with my problem is that the water dispenser stops working when the fridge/freezer stops cooling. My thought is to replace the compressor relay, defrost timer, and defrost thermostat since all of these parts have been involved in other posts, and don't cost much.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Ted

So you are saying that when the fridge and freezer stop working the condenser fan will still run and you can not use the dispenser.

Is there a clicking sound coming from the compressor?

With the symptoms that you are giving it sounds like a problem with the electronic control.

Can you please provide the manufactures number that is on the model number tag?

If the condensor fan is the one in the back next to the compressor, then yes it is running. No clicking from the compressor.

The only thing that I can think of that would cause your problem is the electronic control.

Here is a link to your fridge model SQD26VW.

Weird, I have a SXD26V and yesterday my daughter left the freezer door adjar before we left for 4 hours and when we came back it had the exact same symptoms as described above. We emptied the freezer, cooled the compressor with a fan, this morning I plugged it in and its running. Funny, the water dispenser didnt work last night but is fine this morning, any further ideas?

Well, I bench tested the evap fan and it worked, turns out these models use the Defrost temp switch to complete the circut for the fan (clipped on the top of the condenser), anyway, I replaced the switch and so far so good, It was cooling, just not circulating. Didnt mean to hijack this thread, it was the exact same problem, thanks

I don't recall a defrost temp switch in the parts list for it. Might you be referring to the defrost thermostat or the defrost timer that has the knob on the front of it?

Sorry for the lack of response, I didn't get a notification that you replied to my post. When the unit is not cooling, the evap fan is not working either. It's been running a week now without problems after being unplugged over night. Today I got home from work and it had stopped. So I moved everything, again, and pulled the lower back panel out of the freezer. The finned "thingy", as my 6 year old called it, was totally encased in ice for the top half. The bottom half was "fuzzy" with frost. I took a hair dryer and melted all of the ice, plugged it back in, and presto, it's working again except for the water in the door. So, I suppose that I also have a bad defrost thermostat.

I'll order one and find out. Of course, it will probably take a week after I've put it in to know if that fixed it. Keep your fingers crossed, I really want to convert my other fridge to a keg-a-rator.
