In addition to proper operation of the defrost thermostat and defrost heater element does anyone know if there are other input conditions (to the motherboard) which must be met for the unit to go into defrost? ex. thermistor resistance, doors closed etc. Thanks.

Don't think you have a motherboard, just an adaptive defrost board in the fridg. section.
