Red face Montgomery Ward Chest Freezer
Brand: Other
Model Number: 85059
Age: 5 - 10 years

Can anyone help ? I just purchased a Montgomery Ward 15.8 cu.ft. chest freezer from a second hand store. The freezer was running very good at the store. When I got it home and in the house I could not get it into the desired location without help. It was left overnight resting standing on its side. Did I damage the unit by leaving it standing on its side ? It has been plugged in for 10 hrs now and it is not getting cold. Did I do something stupid or did I get ripped off ?

I have no idea how old the unit is but had to pick an age from the pull down menu. I do not have a manual.

Thank you for any help !

leaving it on its side over night was not a good thing.. You should have set it back on its feet .. The oil will run out of the compressor and into the refrigeration lines. When this happens you should leave the unit "off" after setting it up in its proper position for at least 24 hours to give the oil a chance to return to the compressor. Once you turned it "on" the oil is moved through the system, and with a capulary system the oil is now trying to get through the metering device (cap tube).Which is vary small orfice, and the oil is thick. You may have to place line taps on the unit recover the refrigerant and blow dry nitrogen trough the system.

Default Thank you

GWR,

Thank you for your prompt response. I will let it set for 24hrs in the off position and then see what happens. The rest of your instructions is all Greek to me. I guess I will have to have a repair man do what you suggested if necessary. Hopefully it will work tomorrow.
Thanks,
George

Basically what he is saying is that you may have contaminated the lines where the freon flows. If leaving it upright does not repair the problem a refrigeration tech will have to clean the system and recharge it with freon.

Any savings from buying second hand will quickly be gobbled up
Make sure to get an estimate before placing a service call
May make more sense to junk the unit
