Question Loud "Tick" Noise - Fridge/Freezer Not Cooling
Brand: Frigidaire
Model Number: FRS26ZRFW3
Age: 5 - 10 years

Hi, I write because two days ago my fridge/freezer stopped cooling all of the sudden, it's has happened a few times before and the culprit has been the thermostat but, this time I went ahead and bought the thermostat and nothing changed the fridge/freezer isn't cooling.

Next I manually rotated the timer to see if it is defrosting but the evaporator/heater doesn't heat up either. After that I noticed a loud "tick" noise coming from the back of the fridge every few mins (it did that sound when it was working but not as frequent) so I checked and the loud noise seems to be comming from the Starter PTC, I bought a new one but, the "tick" sound is still happens and the fridge/freezer doesn't want to cool. Right now I'm stuck and I hope it isn't the compressor, I hope you guys can shed some light on this problem.

If the ticking sound you are talking about is coming for the compressor the prognosis is not good.

Sense you have change anything that could be changed it does lead to the compressor being faulty.

Hi,
You can ck the compressor windings with a multimeter if you unplug the electrical connections at the compressor,(remove the start relay). There are three terminals, C., S., R.. set the meter to the ohms setting and touch the meter probes to th C & S. If the reading is "0" ohms, the winding is open and the compressor is bad. If not, touch the probes to C & R. If the reading is "0", the compressor is bad. If not, touch the probes to S & R. If the reading is "0", the compressor is bad. If not, touch one probe to ground (the compressor housing or a compressor mounting bolt should do), and, in sequence, touch the other probe to C, S, R. If the reading is "0", the compressor is bad. Hope this helps, if not, good luck.
