Hello,

We have an Amana SxS fridge that is 6 yrs old. About 2 months ago it apparently defrosted all the way as there were water stains down the front of the fridge (happened while out of town). Again this happened about 3 weeks ago and the freezer defrosted to the point where all items inside melted. When this happens we hear a buzzing sound (for about 10s) followed by a click. At first the time between each buzz/click cycle is relatively long but progressively gets shorter. We're thinking it my be related to defrost thermostat or defrost timer. The fridge never seemed to get warm and the freezer never got totally warm either so it seems that compressor is still working.

Not sure where the defrost timer and thermostat are on this model to check if they are OK.

Awesome, my Amana s/s is doing the same thing. Everything defrosted and that noise keeps on happening. Mine is 5 years old and repair guy wants $100. an hr and can't get here until next Friday! I sure wish I knew how to fix it. Some thanksgiving with a broken frig!

Bummer. Mine continues doing the same, but I no longer think it is the defrost timer. The fridge section is starting to get warm. Before I think the fridge and fan provided enough cooling until compressor kicked back in and worked for 3 weeks or so. I now think it is the compressor not kicking in. I have guy coming out tomorrow, $60 to look at it. I guess possible solutions are a new starter (but may just prolong life and not actually fix dying compressor) or a new compressor is needed.

I guess I'll know more tomorrow.

My refrigerator start making the same buzzing sound for about 5 seconds followed by a click and the buzzing stops just to start again minutes later, and again ... The freezer defrosts and freezes again. The refrigerator still works. Bob, Kathy, what was the problem?

Sounds like your compressor starter rely is trying to start the compressor but overheats in trying and clicks off. Check compressor relayRefrigerator Repair Guide: How To Fix a Refrigerator - ACME HOW TO.com and compressor.

Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately for me it was the compressor. The relay did not solve the issue. Hopefully the relay works for you.
