Default Loud bang from refrigerator.
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: ET8WTEXMQ02
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hello,

This refrigerator makes a periodic loud BANG, predominantly when it's off. I don't mean a clunk or a pop, I mean it sounds like a shotgun going off. The fridge operates just fine, but the noise is very disturbing. Anybody have a clue what causes that, and what might fix it?

Thanks.

Does it happen as it turns off? Could be sign of a failing compressor although it can still last a while. Either fan (condenser fan under unit or evaporator fan in freezer) could make a noise when turning off because of a loose fan or bracket. Try to pinpoint exactly what noise is coming from.

Thanks for the reply. It seem to occur randomly, not at specific times such as the compressor turning off. And it's not a mechanical noise, it's like a firecracker going off, it even scares the schnauzer, it's that loud.
