Default Leaking water on floor underneath freezer side
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: ED5RHAXNQ00
Age: 1 - 4 years

All of a sudden I have water leaking on kitchen floor from underneath freezer side. Thanks goodness I was home when my son noticed the water. The defrost/drain pan is completely filled and overflowing. I turned the water off and emptied the water already in the line. (by drinking glass thru the door dispenser). Everything else on the refrigerator/freezer is working. The unit is approx. 4 years old. It is the Whirlpool ED5RHAXNQ00.
What does this problem sound like, and approximate cost to fix.
From everything I've been able to find it sounds like it might be a water filter housing problem. Is this something a single mom can fix without calling a repairman. (I hate being a helpless female! )

No female is helpless, some just want to act thay way. It is very possible the only thing you need to do is replace the filter. Do that and see if you have anymore problems. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Tom, I am planning on getting a new water filter in the next day or two. In the meantime I am wondering, if the leak problem was caused by not replacing the water filter after the 6 mos of use, why wasn't this issue stressed more in the owner's manual with the refrigerator? I thought that by not replacing the filter would only mean my water would not be purified. I had no idea that it could lead to leaking!
Are all refrigerator/freezers with water purifying filters going to leak if not changed regularly or is this a Whirlpool issue?

Did you turn the water off. Is it still leaking.

Defrost water drips into than pan when the ice is melted during the defrost cycle. An excessive amount of built up ice could overflow it. If for some reason the water in the pan isn't evaporating fast enough it could also overflow.

TuffCookie, and Mr. Woodchuck. When the filter on that model gets clogged, and you ask for water at the dispenser, the water cannot go through the filter, and it leaks right out into the drain pan. I have witnessed this problem at a cutomers house last month. I have only seen this on that particular model. Let me know how it goes Tom ApplianceEducator.com

Good Job, I knew that was it because it did that to me at a customers house. Good Job. Tom
