Thanks for the reply Sheila. You were right about the freezer-on-top description but it turns out there was a little more to it than just removing the top. I managed to find a guy in a local appliance shop that had a new evaporator fan and instructions on how to replace it.
I had to remove both the freezer door and the fridge door to get at a screw that releases an access panel on the front of the unit. After that, the floor of the freezer slides forward & out (not easily) and a piece of insulation had to be removed to finally reveal the fan. Not a very good design -- its almost as if they built the entire fridge around the fan!

P.S. Yes, the compressor seems OK -- the freezer stayed cool for a day and a half without being plugged in so I assumed I didn't have a freon leak (the coils were cold to the touch when I exposed them). Plus, all the noise I heard before the breakdown came from the area of the middle/back of the fridge, not the lower part. Still running good since yesterday so fingers are crossed around here
