Default Kenmore side by side refrigerator freezing food
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: SL256889
Age: 5 - 10 years

Model# 106.52512100
The fridge side of this unit started freezing the lettuce and some vegetables in the top drawer, and now the juices on the top shelf are freezing. Nothing on the door is freezing and the middle shelves aren't either. I had the settings on the factory recommended but turned them down by one number and it is still happening.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Kent

No doubt about it. Replace the thermostat. It is the second knob, from left to right, when you open the refrigerator. The part # is 2198202. If you need instruction on how to replace the thermostat, I can be reached at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Get a thermometer and measure the temp in the freezer
It should be between 0 to 2 degrees F
It is recommended to put it between a couple packs of frozen food and waiting several hours but you could leave it loose just to get a rough idea. Just make sure you are not in a defrost cycle (freezer fan will be off in defrost). It takes a fairly long time for a freezer temp to change especially if it is full.

I could not tell from the parts diagram how the cold air is routed from the freezer into the fridge. This is a more likely cause of your problem.

Just a follow up. The refrigerator seems to be running all the time now. I advanced the defrost timer, and it helped for a little while. Then the refrigerator started running again and everything started to freeze again.

The reason the defrost timer had an effect is:

When you adjusted the defrost timer you probably forced it into a defrost cycle.
The freezer fan shuts off during defrost
So no cold air is forced into the refrigerator
The timer timed out, the compressor and the freezer fan came back on
