Default Kenmore refrigerator isce dispenser flap
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 59599990
Age: 5 - 10 years

My Kenmore refrigerator Model #5959990 has a water and ice dispenser on the door. I’ve recently replaced the water intake valve in the back as it did not dispense water. Now the flap on the ice dispenser does not close completely. As a result, ice forms inside the freezer area where the cubes are crushed/dropped down from the ice cube holding area. Can the flap and/or mechanism be replaced? And if so, how do you replace it?

Thanks for your help.

If the door is not closing the spring may have come out of place.

To check the door out you have to remove the trim of the dispenser.

There should be two slots along the bottom edge to the trim.

Use a flat blade screwdriver to pop the trim off at the bottom and then slide the trim up and off.

Here is a link to the parts of your fridge model 106 59599990.

I had the same problem with Kenmore model 106.59207992. The problem was the ice door "delay mechanism" sticking. I removed the delay mechanism and door closed correctly as the quick fix. Whirlpool Refrigerator Ice Chute Door Kit - 8201649 replaces the door, spring and the delay mechanism as you can't get that part by itself anymore.

The mechanism is a piston with a valve in it in a tube, quite simple. Opening the ice door compresses the piston in the tube with the valve open. When the door starts to shut the valve closes creating suction that provides drag against the spring to allow the door to slowly close. The piston was not moving freely in the tube, preventing the door from shutting. I pulled the piston out, cleaned it, added a small dose of silicone grease, and it now works fine.
