Default Kenmore fridge
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 36358272890
Age: 5 - 10 years

fridge was making a noise that sounded like a model airplane which has now stopped but freezer is in meltdown and fridge not cooling. Also the ice maker seemed to have a water explosion which froze all over everything in there when it was still cold . Turning the cooling control lever to off stopped the noise but as soon as I pushed it back to cold same problem. Now it seems to have died altogether. What part could it be? compressor? Help? And where do I find a diagram and parts list? Thanks for any help.

Kenmore Parts for Models 36358272890

Check to see if the condenser fan at the back bottom of fridge is running.
Is the compressor motor near that fan running.
Are the coils warm ,cold or hot.

Is the evaporator fan in the freezer running. It blows cold air into the fridge side through a damper in the wall between the freezer and fridge. Make sure the damper is open.

Below the evaporator fan is the evaporator coils. Remove the back cover in the freezer to observe the frost pattern. stopped up? clear? ice in one spot . frost everywhere.

thanks for replying. Ok heres the weird thing-the bottom half of the freezer is frozen solid where the top half and all the ice melted down the walls. Fridge walls are cold but items inside not very cold. ideas?

UPDATE
Took panels off freezer and coils had a mountain of solid ice on top of the highest coil so I defrosted with a hair dryer, let it sit for an hour and plugged it back in.. Seems to be working fine now. Fridge is nice and cold too. I have shut off the icemaker and the water to it because I think this must be the source of the ice build up. We'll see.

I'm sure the ice is from normal frost buildup and your defrost system is not working.
Defrost timer, defrost heater or defrost thermostat
