Default Jenn-Air fridge/freezer too warm; coils not iced up
Brand: Jenn-Air
Model Number: JCD2389GEQ
Age: 5 - 10 years

Replaced the Adaptive Defrost Control Board around 6 months ago after our coils started icing up. Since then, the temps have never seemed quite right and instead of having the fridge and freezer temp levers in the middle, I've been moving them over to the right (colder).

We had to empty the fridge for a termite fumigation last week so I figured I'd explore the situation further with an empty fridge. I'm finding that I'm having to move the fridge level all the way to coldest and the freezer lever nearly to coldest to get safe temperatures according to my thermometer (which I've checked/calibrated against a brand new fridge in our rental unit). Would it matter that the fridge is largely empty (would love to test it full of expensive food ;-)

Freezer coils are clean and dry... no icing.
Took out the control works at the top of the fridge and checked the damper door (open - no obstructions), wiring (ok), damper controller (looks OK - can't imagine anything that simple would break), etc.
Also cleaned the compressor coils but really no dust or dirt to speak of.

I suppose it could still be the damper controller or the thermostat. I've put everything back together with a thermometer and I can feel cold air coming through the damper ducts so that appears to be working. Will let it run overnight to see where the temp lands.

Frankly, ready to drop kick this thing - there were comments before about the poor reliability of these expensive Jenn-Air/Amana cabinet-depth units. Am I talking about good money after bad or is this thing worth saving?

Take off the back panel, behind the refrigerator on the bottom, and let me know if the condenser fan motor is running. Also lay your hand on top of the compressor, and let me know how hot it is. You can reach me at my web site at ApplianceEducator.com Tom

Fan is running and compressor feels hot. Not too hot to touch, but too hot to call warm. Fridge is set one click colder than the center and freezer is set to the center, and I've got 42 degrees in the fridge and 6 degrees in the freezer. Jeez...

If you have nothing in there, and you have a hanging thermostat, the temps you are measuring are not totally accurate. You need one of those thermostats, that have the head of the thermostat, where you could read the temperature, and then the thin shaft comes off of that about 5 inches. If you have one of those. Stick a glass of water in the refrigerator tonight, and measure the temperature of it in the morning. Put the thermometer in the water. That is giving you product temperature. I have a feeling that everything is OK, but the compressor is probably hotter then normal, because it is running for a long period of time. Once it achieves temperatures, it won't be as hot. You can check that again in the morning. Let me know. Tom ApplianceEducator.com Ps, make sure the thermometer is calibrate. If you have the one that I am talking about, get a cup of ice, and add some water to it, and put the thermometer in there, and it should read 32 degrees, if not adjust it.
