Cool I've narrowed it down to two things.
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 596.58642891
Age: Please select

So I've narrowed my fridge/ freezer down to two things. Its either my defrost timer or thermostat. I manual put my timer on defrost yesterday and let it sit for a few hours. I then turned my timer from defrost to on. Everything lit up like suppsed to - all fans working. I awoke this morning to find the problem I had found earlier. The Evaporator coils are frosting over, which means that my machine is never going into defrost mode right? So my remedial diagnosis is the listed above. How can I find out which one is malfunctioning without having to purchase both mechanisism? I manually put it in defrost this morning once I found the coils to be frosting over. Am I guiding this the right way and what can I do to make this thing work normally again. I value your opinions. Thank you for you concern.

You will need a new defrost timer.

If the timer was working the defrost cycle would only last about twenty minutes and then the fridge would start back up.

The fridge would then run normally for about eight hours cycling on and off a required to maintain the temperature then it would go in to another 20 minute defrost cycle.

There is a motor in the timer that runs all the time but yours is not.

The thermostat controls the temperature not the defrosting of the fridge.

Here is a link to the parts of your fridge model 596.58642891.
