Default Icemaker will not eject ice
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GS5SHAXNL00
Age: 1 - 4 years

I have a Whirlpool side by side with IR sensors and ice bucket in door. Problem is that ice will not eject properly from the ice maker unit. Water goes in, ice cubes form, but they either get stuck on the top of the ice maker (will not slide off and fall into bucket), or the ejector arm gets stuck in the frozen ice.

The LED and sensor appear fine. LED blinks when blocked and steady on when not.

I tied the TH jumper test but could not get any activity.

When empty, the ejector blade is pointing at my face when looking into the freezer.

Now its stuck in the ice and you can tell that the ice started to come up and out of the tray but stopped.

When it does make ice, cubes seem smaller than usual and they are stuck together and stuck on the ramp.

I had the ice maker module cover off and didn't see any broken gears or plastic parts.

Q: what is the normal position for the ejector arm when the ice maker is empty - i.e. while waiting for the water to freeze. I'm thinking my ejector arm is off by about 10-15 degrees in rotation and thus cannot completely eject the ice - either that or I have an intermittent ejector arm motor and it stops at random places.

Thanks for your help!

It sound like you may have an intermitent problem.

Here is a link on how to test the ice maker.

Smile might have fixed it myself...

Thanks - I did go through these test and could not find anything wrong.

I did notice that the last time the ice got hung on the ramp, that the teeth of the ejector arm seem to be what was holding the ice - I figured that if it would just rotate another few degrees the ice would fall.

So I pulled of the big gear on the outside of the module, rotated the ejector arm a few degrees clockwise, and reinserted the gear.

That was yesterday morning - this morning my ice bucket is 2/3 full!!! (was empty).

So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

One of the fingers that holds the big white gear on did break off when I pulled the gear off, but the one that was left seems to hold it on fine. I did put the other finger back in and shoved a small folded wad of paper between them to hold the gear on better.

My ice is not falling off of the tray again! The teeth are not turning far enough again to let it drop! It seems like such a small problem to fix that I had to spend $100 to replace the entire module - there are so few moving parts - difficult to see what has gone wrong or where the fix is - but there must be some minor adjustment that can be made to get the ejector arm to rotate just a few more degrees during this phase.

At $0.99 for a 10 lb bag - I can keep buying ice at the drugstore - but my family is complaining about the convenience! Please help.
