Default IceMaker Stopped
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: tfx22zr
Age: More than 10 years

Hi Folks,

I have an icemaker that stopped working. I'm looking for ways to troubleshoot it.

The Story:

Last week the dispenser started only giving crushed ice. So I started to track down the problem. I initially thought it might be the selector switch on the front. So I took out the board and checked the switch. The switch seemed to be fine, contacts were opening and closing. So I went on to the freezer. I had to take the icemaker out to get to the back of the unit. It turned out the solenoid that operates the little gate at the crusher had come apart. I put it back together, reinstalled the IM and plugged the fridge back in. I got some ice out of it and the gate was working again. I noticed a funny smell in the freezer, but though it might just be from the thawing that had occurred while I was working on it. I noticed that the IM was cycling. A few minutes later I came checked it again and the IM was still cycling. The heater was on on the IM and was pretty hot. That was were the smell was coming from I think. I just figured it may have kicked into a defrost cycle or something from having the power off.

Now the unit is dead and does nothing.

I don't know why the heater stuck on.

Can someone tell what I should read at the IM plug. I wanted to see if it is getting power at the socket.

There is a small white device attached beside the the heating element, may be a thermistor and may have opened from the heater sticking.

Can someone give me pointers as how to troubleshoot this. I am very mechanically, electrically inclined. An engineer by trade.

Thanks Guys,
Tom

There is a thermostat that is on the ice maker to cut the power to the heater if it stays on to long.

Can you provide the model number of the ice maker.

Can you also provide the last part of your fridge model number.

This can be found on a tag in the fridge section with the serial number.

Thanks for the reply.

I got a new icemaker to replace the old one.

That model number is correct. There are no more digits.

I got that from a couple of dealers here in town, that there were numbers missing.

Thanks Again,
Tom
