Default Ice Maker won't release Ice
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: ED5FHEXNS00
Age: 1 - 4 years

I have a 2yr old Refrig and all of a sudden at Christmas the ice maker was not making ice. I did some testing and found the Water to the door was fine. Next, I found that the teeth were stuck down in the frozen ice.

So I removed the icemaker and defrosted then reinserted. As soon as I put back in it filled the maker with water and the teeth were moving. I thought I was in good shape. Waited a few hours and came back and it was frozen over but the teeth were again stuck in the ice. I took off the front cover of the maker and it seemed the little gear (That says don't manually turn) was trying to turn as it was making a noise but couldn't (probably because it was stuck in the frozen ice!)

In a effort to not burn out the motor I popped the ice lever up to stop the motor.

I re-thawed and the motor did not turn. Then I pushed slightly in on the white gear labeled do no manually turn (I did not turn, just pushed inwards) and it started spinning on it's own. It spun all the way around till the teeth were around 2 o'clock. Then water filled and I waited. Came back a few hrs later and teeth were stuck in the frozen ice again.

Any ideas ? GE says out of warranty. Does this sound like the heater is bad or a sensor or something? I thought about just replacing the whole thing but can't tell if the heater is included in the "complete ice maker assembly" kits. The GE folks said I could pick on up from them for $140 +tax but didn't know if that would be the whole thing (IE> Include the heater). Kind of annoying that this thing died just about 9months after a year old!!

Thanks,

-Phil
