Default Ice maker squeak
Brand: Kenmore
Age: More than 10 years

I just bought a refrigerator/freezer on top off of Craig's list. I am only using it in my basement so i don't need the ice maker. After I plugged in the unit for a while the ice maker started squeaking even though it is in the off position. I decided to just unplug the ice maker but when I did that the whole refrigerator would not come on. I plugged it back in and am wondering if I can disconnect the wires in the icemaker from the gears to see if that will keep them from squeaking. Any suggestions?

My dilema is getting worse. I have read some of the other posts and the noise may be coming from the top part of the freezer. Someone suggested that it may be the evaporator freezer fan needing replaced. The problem is now I have taken the ice maker apart and discovered the whole refrig/freezer will not run when the ice maker is not plugged in. I have plugged it back in without the gears (because I did not pay attention to how they came out) but it still will not come on. This sounds very strange to me that the ice maker is such an integral part of the whole unit. Have you ever heard of this? If true, now I need an ice maker to make the refrig work even though I do want to hook up the water and then the other part to stop the intermittant squeak. Any suggestions?
