Default Ice Maker Quit Working
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 106.53632300
Age: 1 - 4 years

The ice maker on this fairly new Kenmore fridge suddenly quit working. It seems as though the arm that swings thru the ice mold won't spin on its own. I can use my finger and manually get it to spin but then it just sits there doing nothing...When I manually spin the arm thru the mold trying to replicate a 'cycle,' no water is injected into the mold. The water is on and water can be had at the door dispenser.

I've removed the whole ice maker unit and let it defrost to be sure it wasn't stuck frozen, but still nothing.

Any suggestions or ideas?

Can you spin the arm easily or does it take some force?

It is easily spun. It takes no real amount of force at all. There is one spot where there is a 'click' sound each time the arm is spun. Other that that, there is no noise or grating/grinding sounds when it is spun.

When I mentioned that the arm "doesn't spin on its own," I meant that when the ice maker assembly is in place and plugged in, it won't move thru a cycle. No motor noise or anything...

Thanks for any suggestions. I'm open to just replacing the entire assembly.

Question

From the above description of my ice maker problems, would it possibly be that I need to replace the control module?

I've done some more research. I removed the ice maker assembly again and removed the side plate to inspect the control module.

I found that the center piece where the main gear connects (the white colored gear that says "do not rotate manually" )was broken and that allowed that wheel to disconnect from the other gear it meshes with.

It looks like I will need part # PS381007

Talking My *free* DIY fix for this ice maker

If you look at the picture above, you'll see the split shaft that the big white gear fits onto. That's one of those shafts that contracts allowing the gear to slip on. Then when it is on completely, the shaft expands and locks the gear on.

That's where my original problem started. A small piece of that split shaft broke off and that allowed the big white gear to move outward and disconnect from the smaller gear that you can't see in the pic.

My *free* DIY fix was to simply line up the swing arm into the "start" position and Super Glue the big white gear back onto the shaft. I dodged a $70. bullet by not having to buy a whole new Control Module...
