Question Ice machine making thin ice & draining too much water
Brand: KitchenAid
Model Number: KUIS185JSS2
Age: 1 - 4 years

This is a 50 lb ice machine that has not been used in a while. I recently hooked it up and it makes thin ice and uses way too much water. Ran it overnight and it drained over 10 gallons. Does this indicate a usual problem where I can just replace a part or is it something that can be one of many problems. I don't think it is worth a service call as that will run well over $300 when all said and done. But I am willing to try a replacement part. The ice is 1/4 to 3/8 inches thick. Also, doen anyone know how much water this model is supposed to drain per pound of ice or per day? One last question. I see how it circulates the water as the ice is forming but where/how does it drain the water once the cycle is completed?

Other than the parts breakdown I don't have any information on this ice maker unit.

You can try calling Whirlpool
US 1-866-698-2538 Canada 1-800-807-6777.

They may be able to answer your questions.

I have since spoken to Kitchenaid and the ice is supposed to be about 3/8" thick. I would have thought it would be twice that. Also, they confirm the unit consumes a staggering 24 gallons of water per day. I am a bit surprised by that but I guess the unit is working properly. Thanks.
