Question Ice in freezer blocks openings to refrigerator
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 70162990
Age: 5 - 10 years

Kenmore Refrigerator, model 70162990. The refrigerator compartment stops getting cold. When I remove the freezer floor panel I see ice blocking 2 holes that open into the refrigerator compartment. I have to remove this ice blockage weekly and then the fridge is cold again. What is the permanent fix? Thanks!

Your fridge is not defrosting.

It is either your timer, your heater, or your defrost bi metal.

Locate the timer in the control panel in the fridge section.

All you will see is two screws with a knob in the center.

With the compressor running turn the knob until the compressor stops running.

The fridge will now be in the defrost cycle. It must have a frost build up for this to work.

The heater should come on and melt the frost.

If the heater comes on you will need a new timer.

If the heater does not come on you will have to check the heater and bi metal with a meter to see which one is faulty.

The bi metal has to be cold when checked.

Here is a link to the parts of your fridge model 10670162990.

Here is the defrost timer.

Here is the defrost bi metal.

Shiela,

The freezer may be defrosting but the water will not drain. It causes backup of water that fills the hole to the lower compartment. I used a copper strap wrapped around the heating element and ran it down the drain tube. It will melt the ice in the tube and allow the water to drain.

Fixed my problem!

Michael
