My freezer gets warm (up to 32deg) then gets cold again-- sometimes after several hours. I could not find a pattern for it.

Following answers to other posts, I wanted to check the thermostat, so I took off the back panel-- that is when I saw the ice. I think I found the themostat -- it has 2 wires and was clipped onto the coil. But it is sealed so I cannot check with an ohm tester. The other ends of the wires go back into a hole behind the coil.

Can I cut the wires to test it and if it is okay, connect them back with electrical tape?

Also, another post suggested I test the heater. How do I do that?

Am I looking at the right things to solve this problem?

The thermostat that you found is for the defrost cycle only.

When in the defrost cycle the heater comes on and melts the frost.

The defrost thermostat terminate the defrost heater when the temperature rises.

The defrost thermostat is in series with the heater.

To test the heat follow the wiring diagram and locate the wires for the heater.

Is the fan in the freezer working?

How mush frost is on the coils?

It may be that the fridge is going in to the defrost cycle to often.

This would be cause by the adaptive defrost control.

The adaptive defrost control is located in the control panel in the fridge.

It could also be that there is a leak in the sealed system.
