Default Ice dispenser lockout weirdness
Brand: Kenmore
Model Number: 25351232102
Age: 5 - 10 years

Greetings Appliance Gurus,

I just picked up a used side by side that is in generally nice shape but I'm puzzled by the ice maker behavior. Every time the freezer door is opened and shut, the ice/water dispenser light comes on and the and the dispenser controls are locked out. Pressing the lock button for a few seconds unlocks everything as expected. This cycle repeats every time the freezer is opened. Is this normal behavior? It is quite annoying.

Thanks for your input,

Tom

This happens so ice can not be dispensed with the door opened.

It is normal.

I'm not so sure. While you obviously want the dispenser locked out while the door is open, that it remains locked out after the door is shut AND turns on the dispenser light gives me pause. Regardless of the lockout, I don't think I should have to manually turn off the dispenser light each time I shut the freezer door

Nonetheless, thank you for your input.

Tom,
Wondering if you ever found out what causes this. I am having the same problem and was not like that when it was new, just started doing in in the last couple of months.

Yes, It supposed to lockout the Icemaker/water when the door is open but they should start working again as soon as the door is shut. At least that is the way it worked when new.

I would like to try to fix this myself if easy and don''t want to put any more money in it. Since I am tired of giving service people 150 bucks every time they come and look at it. and it has happened quite often. If I would have known this unit was such a pile. I would have saved all the service call money and had a new fridge by now. Just waiting for it to completely die before getting a new one.

Nope, I never found out. The thing that was really bugging me was the light that would always come on. I ended just up disabling the dispenser by unplugging the wires on the top of the door hinge.

If you do figure it out, it would be fantastic if you would post the fix.

Regards,

Tom

Tom,
Well thanks for the quick reply.

Think I found the part that probably went bad.

It is part # 833911 and the fridge is actually made by frigidaire, this site won't let me link to it, but you can do a search on "frigidaire 833911

Pretty expensive and looks pretty simple. I am going to be to busy to get to it in the next week or so but will get it taken apart and do some testing and see if I can find what is wrong with it. From what I have read I believe the plastic cover where the buttons are justs pops off and the board is behind it. you might want to check just to make sure no loose wires on it or look to see if anything looks burn't.

Otherwise I will update in a couple weeks when I have time to tear it apart.

Thanks Ron
