Question Ice Chute door stuck open
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: SSS25KFMDWW
Age: 1 - 4 years

The dispenser chute is wide open! It use to only be open a hair but not it is open as far as it can be. I was wondering how to remove the front panel to inspect the spring on this part and also what can be causing it. I read somewhere that it is a silinoid (totally spelled wrong) and where that would be located and how difficult to replace.

The entire chute is full of frost, ice and fills the opening to the ice bin. I have to pour hot water into the chute atleast once a week and dump the ice bin every weekend as it freezes to a solid mass if I don't I am becoming very frustrated with this.

Please offer as much advice as you can. I just rebuilt a riding lawnmower by using a forum so I am pretty apt in following directions. Thanks so much!

Here is a link to the breakdown of your fridge model SSS25KFMDWW.

On this model I am not sure how the trim comes off to get at the solenoid and shut door.

Check along the bottom edge of the trim there may be slots.

If there is pry out and the bottom should release.

Then push up on the trim to release the top.

Thank you for the great info. FYI for future reference you access the solenoid by gently prying the bottom of the push button pad and then lifting it comes off really easy. Once you know what you are doing.

When I got in there I found what I feared.... a rusty solenoid. :-( so not having the funds right now I decided to take a chance and use a drummel on it. I took the center out and used sand paper on it so remove all the rust and smooth the pitting caused by the rust... also I used the sand paper on the inside where the lifing device of the solenoid goes put everything back together and installed everthing back the way it goes.... tested it figuring at least the door is closed at this point so I have a seal until next week when I can get the part. Well to my amazement it works!!! It opens to allow ice to dispense and as the light goes out the door closes! Hope this experience helps with anyone else who has a similar problem as mine. I know it is only a temporary fix but it did work! :-) Thanks again for the parts link.
