Default Ice buildup in bottom of freezer - defrost timer?
Brand: Whirlpool
Age: 5 - 10 years

Our Whirlpool Gold Series (don't have # with me here) keeps forming a thick layer of ice on the floor of the freezer. I have to chip it out and dump boiling water in the back until the dime-sized drain hole / tube clears out.

This has been happening for the last 2 years but now very regularly. Initially we thought we were just packing food too close to the fan but now are careful not to, and the freeze frequency is just too quick now.

I surfed here some, sounds like maybe defrost timer or heater? I am going to try and locate / pull / test the timer tonight, but thought I'd post my issue anyway as all the posts I read more referred to "frost on the coils" which is not our problem.

It is a top-freezer, with an ice maker. All other functions are fine - just ice build up, which leads to a fridge full of water.

Thanks in advance!

-Paul

Your drain tube must be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little air pressure will usually clear it out. Flush it out with hot water and clorox may help. Make sure it drains quick enough. The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.
Take a bare copper wire and wrap it around a fin near the heater and put the other end a few inches down the drain. The heat convection may prevent it from freezing.

I appreciate your reply Woodchuck, I have seen that answer to other posts I had surfed.

I am not sure it is applicable here, as when I dump the boiling water down the drain tube it eventually opens up and pours out into the pans underneath - enough to overflow onto the floor. I'd imagine if it were stopped up with mold or dust it wouldn't flow?

Is there a way to inspect the bottom area? The back is sealed with flat metal top to bottom.

Thanks again, any further insight greatly appreciated.

Regards,

-Paul

If it drain too slow as you indicated, it has time to freeze at the top and gradually stop up the drain.
