Default Ice buildup in bottom of freezer
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: TFH30PR
Age: More than 10 years

Ice is building up in the bottom of our GE side by side refrigerator to the point of running out the bottom of the freezer door. I've tried to locate the defrost timer but have not been able to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated in fixing this problem. The refrigerator still cools like new, but the defrost is not working properly.

Thanks,

Mark

Your drain tube must be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little air pressure will usually clear it out. Flush it out with hot water and clorox may help. Make sure it drains quick enough. The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back inside of the freezer. Your defrost system is working. That is defrost water dripping and running out on the floor. But anyway here is your timer. Part 257 in this diagram. TFH30PR Parts List

Thanks for responding!

You're right the drain tube gets froze up and then it doesn't drain. I've used a hair dryer to thaw it out and then blow it out with an air compressor, but it's not long before it does it again. I thought maybe the timer was bad or something.

Maybe this will work. Take a bare copper wire and wrap it around a fin near the heater and put the other end a few inches down the drain. The heat convection may prevent it from freezing.

I have this problem and I just push a little hot water down the drain with a turkey baster! The drain is located in the bottom left side of freezer compartment.
