Unhappy Ice build up in the bottom of freezer
Brand: Magic Chef
Age: 5 - 10 years

There is water draining into the bottom of the freezer and is freezing over. I'll remove it and it will build right back up. Does anybody know what to do? Can't tell where it is coming from.

Your drain tube must be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little air pressure will usually clear it out. Flush it out with hot water and clorox may help. Make sure it drains quick enough. The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.

one of the following myb cause of the failure:
drain line clogged
defrost heater burn out
defrost thermo stuck open
defrost timer coil or contact faulty
evaporator fan motor faulty

Default Jenn-Aire (Maytag) ice buildup still a problem...

I have had the same problem with my freezer for about 2 years now. Each time, I let the ice melt, clear the drain tube and all will be fine for a couple of months, but eventually the problem returns. It seems that the metal drain pan is too cold during the self defrost cycle and eventually the drain itself ices over.

Are there any retro-fit solutions to what appears to be a basic design flaw? Does anyone else have this problem continuously?

Thanks!

I've heard of people wrapping a copper wire around the defrost heater and running the other end down the drain tube. The heat transfers through the wire while it's on, preventing the water in the tube from freezing while it's defrosting. Although a drain that drains fast enough shouldn't freeze.
