Default Hotpoint Refrigerator Freezer Not Cooling
Brand: Hotpoint
Model Number: HSS22IFMD CC
Age: 1 - 4 years

Frig/frezer stopped freezing suddenly and water would seep out of the freezer section at the front bottom of the door. I unplugged and left sitting in my garage from a couple of weeks. After plugging back in and running for 3 days, found the feezer temp holding 28^F and frig at 556F. I checked and found the evaporator completely covered solid with ice. Unit doesn't appear to be going into defrost. I removed the defrost temp switch and found that there is continuity across it. I removed the defrost heater assembly and found that I do not have continuity across it. This part looks like a glass capsule with what appears to be very rusty wound wire through it from end to end (my guess is that this is actually a heating element). Should I get continuity across this part when checking the electrical connection lugs on each end? I think I should.

Could one of these two item be the problem? Any other ideas on what else may be the problem? Uit is in excellent shape and I hate to scrap it if it could be repaired for $100. All fans appear to be working properly.

With the wires disconnect from the heating element you should get continuity.

Here is a link to your fridge model HSS22IFMD CC.

Here is your heating element.
