Unhappy Hollow Ice cubes
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: GR2SHKXKB00
Age: 5 - 10 years

This Top freezer model has problem making ice cubes, water is int the tray it freeze partially thus inside of cube is still water so when ice is dumped only the shell of ice comes out. Water pressure is good, water valve was just replaced, to keep the temp cool in the freezer compartment, I put couple gallon jugs filled with water. But the problem of making hollowcubes continue. Is this problem with the icemaker itself, the machine itself looks like it goes through cycle normally, I don't see any defects nor see problem with motor. Also, I cannot seem to find the icemaker part in Partselect.com.

thanks,

The problem of hollow ice cubes can be caused by low water pressure to the fridge.

Although you said that your house water pressure is good if the line going to the fridge has a saddle valve on it this could cause the problem.

If the temperature in the freezer is not cold enough this can also cause hollow cubes.

If you have had this fridge for a few years with no trouble my guess would be the saddle valve.

What happens with the saddle valve is mineral build up in side the line where the piercing valve goes through the line.

Installing a regular pluming tap type valve may fix your problem.

Default Still same problem

1) water pressure to the fridge is good. No problem with saddle valve.
2) Water valve (regulator) for fridge has been replaced.
3) lower the temp to freezer to max, put couple gallon jugs with water to keep the air cool in the freezer.
4) check the icemakers cycle and it seems to be working.

Yet, I am still getting hollow cubes.

thanks,

Try filling the ice cube tray manualy and see what happens.

Is this a new problem that has just started in the last little while or has it made hollow ice cube from day one?
