Default Hollow Ice Cubes
Brand: Whirlpool
Model Number: n/a
Age: 5 - 10 years

I realize this isn't truly a new topic as I've already searched the forum and read many instances of this problem as well as the solutions. However, I'm curious whether adding a water filter to the icemaker supply line would prevent this from reoccurring (my speculation is gunk is building up inside the valve). I've experienced hollow ice cubes twice on the same refrigerator. The first time was under warranty and the servicer fixed it by replacing the inlet valve on the back of the refrigerator. The second time it happened it was out of warranty so I found a replacement valve online for my make and model number and replaced it myself. Now, it's starting to happen again but intermittently. I've already purchased my third inlet valve but have yet to install it.

Yes if there is not enough water you will end up with hollow cubes.

Check the screen in the water valve to see if it is blocked.

Also if a saddle valve was used to connect the water line to your house water line it may be causing it also.

Can you please supply your model number?

Thank you for the prompt response. I was more interested if anybody had any experience adding an aftermarket water filter like they sell at Home Depot or Lowe's and its effect on this issue.

"Ice" is food. Therefore would you not want it as clean as possible.
I 've installed many of add-on water filters to commercial ice machines as nine out of ten the problem is water related.
