Default GE side by side, warm refrigerator
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: 162062956042 rev46
Age: 5 - 10 years

Freezer holds 25 degrees F, refrigerator side has gotten steadily warmer. When cleaning coils I noticed the evaporator tray was bone dry and didn't look like it had any water for months. If the evaporator was iced up would it cause this? How do I check?

Thanks

Open the back panel in the freezer and if totally frosted over defrost with a hair dryer
You probably have a bad defrost thermostat.

Yes if the evaporator is ice up it will cause the fridge to get warm.

To check the defrost cycle look in the fridge section behind the light shield.

There you will find the defrost timer but all your will see of it is two screws and a knob between them.

With the compressor running turn the knob until the compressor stops running.

You are now in the defrost cycle.

The cycle will last at least 20 minutes.

Check your tray and see if you are getting any water in it.

If you get water in the tray then you have a faulty defrost timer.

If after 20 minutes the fridge starts back up and the fridge has not defrosted you have a faulty defrost thermostat or defrost heater.

You would need a meter to check these.

Here is a link to your fridge model Tfx25jrbbww.

Here is your defrost timer.

Here is your defrost heater and thermostat.

While waiting for test to finish I noticed food I put in freezer 10 hours ago had not frozen fully. Is the 25 degrees in the freezer cold enough ?

Refrigerator has not restarted after 45 minutes? Should this test last this long?

You should turn the knob on the defrost timer to start the fridge back up.

Your timer will need to be replaced.

we have the same problem, but after I changed the timer, you still need to manually turn the timer to let it back to freeze cycle, does that mean the new part is defect also?

Is it possible that the thermostat in the freezer is in control of the cycles? we changed both of the timer and thermostat, it only worked for 3 weeks, then it stopped defrost again.

please give furthur advice.
