Default GE side by side making howling sounds
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: gsh25jsrfss
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hi. I have a GE side by side refrigerator that has an automatic ice maker. For the last month it has been making these weird howling sounds that seem to be coming from the back of the freezer section of the refrigerator.

I have dumped ice and let it refill, cut the thermostat down to low and then also to high.

Ice is making fine, the freezer is staying cold and the regrigerator is working fine as well.

Just have no clue what it could be.
Any help for the howling refrigerator family?

Model #GSH25JSRFSS

Thanks so much!

This is one view on the subject and others point to the control board.

The condensor under your refrigerator was a newer design from GE, it is round shaped with a hollow center, the idea was to be able to cool that area more efficiently. But when the refrigerators are in cut out areas of the kitchen, they tend to pick up a howling noise whenever the fan at the compressor is running. Call GE and have patience, go to a supervisor, but be nice and explain your problem expressing your disappointment and they should send a GE tech out to change the condensor fan motor, the replacement will be quieter, but there is no real solution to eliminate the noise that I am aware of to date.

It's not condenser related, it is evaporator. My GE does exactly the same thing and the evap motor cycles on and off about every two seconds and it makes a howling sound. Mine started about 8 weeks ago and the fridge is only 2 years old.

replace your control panel. Found the answer on another site. It is easy to do, costs around 100 bucks and it fixed my howling problem, clicking problem, and my water and ice despenser not working.

Your main board p/n is WR55X10552 (GE)
you can Google it, buy it from this forums sponsor's Parts Select or buy it from your local refrigerator parts store (like Maytag etc) cost between $75 to $130 (depending where you buy it from)
Part location is on back wall of the refrigerator inside 8X12 inch panel.
