Default GE sid by side not cooling in refrigerator side
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: tfx20jrsm
Age: More than 10 years

My GE side by side TFX20JRSM is not cooling on the refrigerator side. Well it is getting down to just under 60 degrees. Freezer is working fine. Any idea what could be the problem. I hope I have not ask this question here previously. If I have please forgive me. cjwdoyle

The cold air for the refrigerator side comes from the freezer by way of a vent near the top. The air is blown from the freezer by the EVAPORATOR FAN .check it.

If the evaporator coils are iced up due to auto defrost failure the fan can't pull the cold air across the coils. Check for ice on and or behind the back wall where the coils are. Probably easier to see from bottom. You may have to take the back panel off to see.

So your all iced up. CHECK DEFROST TIMER--- CHECK DEFROST HEATER---CHECK DEFROST THERMOSTAT

Problem solved. I am just now thinking to thank woodchuck for the above post. It was one of the two defrost heaters that had died. We replaced both heaters, defrost timer and defrost thermostat at the same time. Altogether all of the parts were somewhere around $100.00 and it works like a champ now. I was amazed at how easy it was to get to the parts and replace them. My husband did all of the work but after watching him I could easily do it and I am not experienced at this sort of thing at all. Thanks again woodchuck.

By the way forgot to mention on post I just did. We did not bother with checking any of the parts. It was easy to see that one defrost heater was dead (element burned in two) and the entire thing was frozed up completely. That is when we decided to replace everything connected to the defrost part. It would have been foolish (in our opinion) to replace one part now and have another go bad next week. I say this because the parts were cheap and easy to get to and replace.
