Default GE s/s refrigerator humming
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: GSL25WGPH
Age: 1 - 4 years

Hi ... I have a 3 year old GE side by side refrigerator model number GSL25WGPH. The freezer fan seems to be "revving" up and slowing down, like a manual transmission car when shifting. By doing a few searches on the internet, it appears to be either the mother board, which controls the fan speed, or the bearings in the fan. When only a few months old, I had the circuit board changed under warranty when the darn thing wouldn't stop running. Now a few years, the fan noise has started.

Any advice on what I should replace first or how to test what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Without testing it my guess is the mother board.

Is there any noise from the bearing?

I would call GE and tell them what is happening.

GE has been replacing the mother board in a lot of fridges that are out of warranty.

Here is the number for General Electric
US 1-800-626-2005 Canada 1-877-959-8688.

Make sure you have your full model number and serial number and date of purchase.

Here is a link to your fridge model GSL25WGPH.

For a detailed breakdown of your fridge you will need the last to letter of the model number.

Thanks, Sheila. Though I'm not sure what the bearings would sound like on the freezer fan, I'm guessing it's the mother board again. Just the fact that it is so inconsistent, with the speeding up and slowing down, like the control board is trying to regulate the temperature in short intervals. I've noticed from doing research on the internet that this seems to be a common problem for fairly new GS side by sides.

I called GE and got nowhere with it. They said to have a tech come out and determine the problem. It seems like others have gotten different responses when calling GE. Some say they have had mother boards replaced at no cost even when out of warranty. They claim GE has a limited recall on certain models. The GE rep I talked to today said nothing is noted for my model. I gave her the other model numbers people were having trouble with and she refused to check those. Ironically, each of the models people were having trouble with use the same mother board.

I think I'll just order a new board, install it myself and see if it fixes the problem. It would cost about the same to have a tech come out to isolate it.

Thank you, Sheila. I appreciate your help. I'll let you know if this fixes it.

I finally got around to replacing the control board. It did solve the problem though I broke one of the little plastic pins that hold the board in place. I'll have to do some more research to see how to replace it.

I'm about done with GE products. This refrigerator has given me nothing but problems and it is only 3 years old. Also have a GE microwave that is starting to make weird noises too.

Thanks for your help and advice, Sheila.

Your very welcome.

The clips to hold the board are available and the part number is PS284614.

Thanks for the part number, Sheila. I actually found a couple of the fasteners but can't get them attached to the frig. Do you have any tips on getting the fasteners pushed back into the holes on the frig? I tried to squeeze it with some pliers but still couldn't get them back in. I can't get the frame for the board enclosure off of the refrigerator since it appears the screws were stripped.

First I must say I have not seen the pins/standoffs you are talking about but the below has worked for me with some push in standoffs

Make sure that the standoff will actually fit
You may have to make it a little smaller, fine sand paper is better than a file for doing this.

If it will fit but the plastic is just too hard, place the standoff in some hot hot water for 10 minutes then give it a try.

Great suggestions. The hot water one is one I should have tried. I have the board back in but only secured with two of the pins. I wish I would have had your ideas before putting everything back in place I might pull it back out and see if it works. Then again, if it's working maybe I should just be lazy and let it be Thanks again!
