Default GE refrigeretor sounds like an elephant...
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: gts18sbswrss
Age: Less than 1 year

Hi.

I have bought a brand new GE fridge 3 weeks ago and started hearing weird noise since the first time i plugged it in. The noise begins about 30 seconds after the compressor starts and the sound it makes is not always identical. The first few days it sounded like a small motocross changing gears, going from a lower pitch "grunt" to a higher pitched noise in 3-4 seconds, like when your car changes gears. Some days it sounds like it has gas, today it is very similar the to the motocross gear changing but at a higher pitch, which sounds like an elephant moaning. Each independant noise lasts from 3 to 5 seconds, pauses for half a second and repeates endlessly for 2-3 minutes or until the engine stops.

I called GE and they sent a repairman today. While he was here the noise was different, quieter but constant and he said it was normal as the gas traveled through the pipes. About 15 minutes after he left it started again. It isn't either fans and seem to be coming from behind the freezer. It is too loud to be normal oppertaing noises. Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Yan

This is one view on the subject and others point to the control board.

The condenser under your refrigerator was a newer design from GE, it is round shaped with a hollow center, the idea was to be able to cool that area more efficiently. But when the refrigerators are in cut out areas of the kitchen, they tend to pick up a howling noise whenever the fan at the compressor is running. Call GE and have patience, go to a supervisor, but be nice and explain your problem expressing your disappointment and they should send a GE tech out to change the condenser fan motor, the replacement will be quieter, but there is no real solution to eliminate the noise that I am aware of to date.
