GE fridge ice maker makes loud buzz hum when the ice door opens Brand: General Electric Model Number: TBX25PRBSRAA Age: 5 - 10 years We've had this problem before, I played with it and problem went away somewhat. I'd like to find out a better solution.
in the water / ice dispenser, when the solenoid to open the ice door is energized, there's a loud buzz / hum. I've found that if I hold the ice door open even more than the solenoid opens it, (taking the 'load' / weight of the door / spring off the solenoid), the buzzing stops.
I've taken the system apart and gotten to the solenoid which I forget what I did to it before, but there was rust and a bit of grease? on the piston / plastic recess where the piston is in. There's lots of play between the diameter of the piston and the plastic well diameter.
Is there something that I should put on the piston to quiet the buzz? Is it, I think it's called historesis - like a transformer buzzes? Replace the solenoid? I tried graphite, didn't help. I tried teflon tape over the piston, didn't help (again, there's loads of play between the piston and the pastic coated cavity).
If I energize the solenoid out of the door, it is quiet. Any pulling up of the piston against the energized pull of the coil, and you get that buzz.
The date code on the solenoid puts it as made in 1999. Do they wear out? Its been a longstanding problem / the probelm hasn't gotten worse over time. it's just annoying.
