Default Ge freezer shuts itself off periodically
Brand: General Electric
Model Number: ff20dxbrwh
Age: 5 - 10 years

Our trusty GE upright freezer is shutting itself off periodically. I have replaced the temp sensor and have now ordered the cold control to replace. Just going through a process of elimination. When I tapped on these parts, the freezer would start again, so I have chosen these to replace first. Any insights, hindsights etc would be most appreciated!! thanks a millin in advance, Bob.

It is likely the cold control.

Be careful when installing the new control not to damage the capillary tube.

dear shiela, thanks for the feedback!
I have the cold control on order so my fingers are crossed. The cold control has a little styrofoam box on the back that uses some kind of flexible caulk to seal the box that I had to break to get it off, any idea what will substitute for the caulk, maybe "plumbers putty"? Also, this problem surfaced all of a sudden during the winter months this last winter. (didnt have any problem the winter before) As it sits in a garage that freezes, could this be causing a problem for the controls i.e. is not in a heated space ?
We have another, newer and smaller GE upright freezer that sits next to this one in the garage and is plugged into the same outlet, and has no problems at all. I am thinking it's the age of the older one perhaps? thanks a million for any info you have, bob.

It not really caused by age or the cold it just one of the things that can happen to the control.

The caulking is a putty and plumbers putty should do the trick.
